Sammi's Answer
1) How often were you caught in a lie lately? How did you react?
2) Most of the time, what happens when you are "caught in a lie" is just that some clues appear that contradict a specific assumption that other could make about you.
So it does not usually means that that you clearly lied, but only that there is a presumption against you.
In this case, because the consequences of admitting the lie could be extremely destructive for you, many of us would just try some denying strategies, if it seems that there is a chance to convince the others that they did not lie.
Another reason could be that you have some interest to delay the revelation of your lie until a certain point in time, after which you won't care so much.
3) According to this page, admitting a lie is usually not the best strategy:
"Being caught in a lie doesn’t have to end badly for you, if you follow the following advice.
Step 1: Deny
Deny, deny, deny—even if the evidence is staring them in the face. No matter how bald-faced your lie, remain calm and simply state that you have no idea what they’re talking about or why they’d accuse you of such a thing.
Step 2: Start laughing
Start laughing. Not only will it completely ruin their train of thought, but they’ll start to wonder if maybe they are mistaken—or else why would you be laughing?
Step 3: Go on the offensive
If they’re still ranting about your duplicity, go on the offensive. Say in a loud voice, “And what about all the times YOU have lied to ME.” Keep insisting it is they who are the liar as they become apoplectic with rage.
Step 4: Cry victim
Accuse them of victimizing you because of your race, gender, socioeconomic status, or whatever else springs to mind, especially if it has no relevance whatsoever. That should stop them dead in their tracks—especially if you’re a rich white male."
"Step 5: Change the subject
Abruptly change the subject to something not even remotely related to the topic at hand. How about those Yankees?
Step 6: Come clean
If all else fails, suck it up and come clean. Sometimes, you’ve just gotta admit defeat."
