Initially, appearance would play a partial factor, but to properly determine if I appreciate someone (note: not judge), then it would be by their words and actions and less by appearance.
Their appearance but only until I've had enough time to observe their actions. Then appearance means nothing. You can tell a lot about someone by their appearance but their actions means a lot more. Words are cheap and mean very little when making a new acquaintance.
I judge pretty much everyone by appearance. At least initially. Once I get to know someone better, I start to judge them on more substantive things. Of course, I only bother to get to know people who pass my initial appearance judgment.
You, like most of us, will unconsciously make a few judgments at first meeting but no one knows enough about another person to begin quickly making judgments after knowing them a short time..
